5 Energy-Saving Tips for Pet Owners

We all want to save money by reducing energy costs at home. Here’s how pet owners can save some cash and breathe better too!

Set a programmable thermostat.
Go ahead and set your thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter whenever you’re away from home. Your pets naturally regulate in both warm and cold temperatures in ways humans can’t. It’s generally recommended that pet owners set the AC to 78 degrees in the summer and 68 degrees in the winter, but certainly double-check with your vet.

Unplug the fans.
While a cool breeze sounds like a nice idea, most pets have thick coats that would prevent them from feeling the effects of the fan. And pets don’t produce sweat like their owners. Unplugging fans that normally run when you’re away will save a good chunk of energy.

Turn out the lights.
Since animals rely upon natural light and darkness to regulate their internal clocks, keeping the lights on isn’t going to do much for them, and it will definitely waste resources.

Install an energy-efficient doggie door.
Replace your traditional pet door with a newer model that offers sealing properties to keep the air conditioning or heat where it belongs—in your house!

Wash fabrics in cold water.
Did you know that studies have shown it’s the agitation that cleans fabric—not so much the soap and water temp? When it’s time to launder pet blankets and covers, opt for cold water to use far less energy.
