7 Tips to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

Clean up
We know it’s hardly glamorous, but keeping your home clean this winter can go a long way toward improving your home’s air quality. Vacuum floors, window blinds and drapes to remove dust and dirt. Launder clothing and bedding regularly to help give allergens and irritants the boot.

Go natural
When you clean, opt for eco-friendly cleaning solutions wherever possible. Your whole family will breathe easier without the irritation of harsh chemicals.

Air it out
As weather permits, crack open a few windows to let a little fresh air enter your home. Don’t leave a window wide open in below-freezing temperatures, but try to let a cool breeze enter your home for an hour or so every now and then to avoid breathing in the same stagnant indoor air.

Vent it
Excess moisture from showering and bathing will cause mold and mildew to proliferate in your home. Install—and use—bath vent fans to help deal with the moisture. Remember to use your exhaust fan when you cook in the kitchen, and consider adding them to closets and laundry rooms that could use help ridding themselves of musty air.

Plant indoors
Certain plants can help purify the air. Consider adding ferns, a peace lily, bamboo palm or other helpful plants to your home decor.

Balance humidity
Depending upon your indoor conditions, you may need to employ a humidifier or dehumidifier to get your air to where it needs to be. Overly dry air will contribute to more winter illness, and too much moist air can make you sick too.

Change filters
When’s the last time you changed your HVAC filters? If not regularly replaced, your heating system can get bogged down with dander and other irritants and continue to cycle them through the air.
