Gas Safety Tips

This season, as we all prepare to celebrate the holidays, Air Comfort would also like to help you prepare for safety. Here are some very important home tips to protect your family from accidents with natural gas.

  • Always listen to your nose. If at any time you smell the odor of natural gas, get away. Then contact your natural gas provider or call 911.

  • Remember that pilot lights and gas burners should glow with a steady, blue flame to indicate they are operating properly.

  • Each year, have all gas appliances, furnaces, vents, flues, chimneys and gas lines inside your home inspected by a qualified professional.

  • Always keep the areas around your gas appliances clean and unblocked to ensure proper air flow.

  • Always follow the manufacturer instructions for proper care and use of your gas appliances and equipment.

  • Be sure to have at least one fire extinguisher in your home.

  • Never allow children to play with or near natural gas appliances or pipes, including the knobs on the oven or stove top.

  • Never use your stove or oven for anything other than cooking–like heating your home.

  • Never move or install a gas appliance or change the connector without professional guidance.

  • Don’t use a space heater unless you know it has been properly vented. If you’re using a vent-free model, be sure the automatic cut-off switch is working correctly.

  • Never install a gas appliance without the assistance of a qualified contractor.

  • Don’t store household chemicals or any combustible material near gas appliances.
