Get Your Cooling System Ready For A Heat Wave | Air Comfort HVAC
When you live in Georgia or Tennessee, you know it’s only a matter of time before the weather really starts to make you sweat! That’s why now is a good time to start thinking about everything you need to do to make sure your cooling system can handle the heat ahead. Air Comfort HVAC has put together three simple steps you can take in April so your home doesn’t suffer this summer. Itching for more? Here’s a checklist you can go through as well.
Keep up with your filter.
As always, a properly maintained filter is crucial to the health of your cooling system. Most people today use disposable air filters which should be replaced every 30 days when your system is in high use. Some folks may have a more permanent filter which needs to be cleaned thoroughly every month. A dirty air filter isn’t only bad for your health–it also makes your whole system work harder. Failure to maintain a clean air filter will likely result in more frequent problems, and you could even need to replace your cooling system years ahead of its natural life.
Clear the outdoor clutter.
If you’ve got an outdoor HVAC unit, it’s time to go outside and check it out. Any debris like plants, branches or dirt should be cleared away from your unit. Don’t plant flowers or shrubs too close to your outdoor unit, and keep in mind that this is really a seasonal job. If you wait until spring every year to clean your outdoor unit, you’ll struggle to ever completely get it clean. Try to maintain about a 2 feet distance between your unit and any plants.

Get a programmable thermostat.
Any time we talk about summer in the South, we’re bound to think about how to manage those energy bills. You always want to keep your cooling system working efficiently to minimize your energy usage. The next thing you can do is install a programmable thermostat. This allows you to program your indoor temperature to your best advantage so the cooling system can catch a break when nobody’s home.
Ideally, you’ll get your HVAC system inspected by a professional twice a year–once in the spring and once in the fall. Following the recommended schedule will allow any small problems to be unearthed before they become bigger ones. That way, you’ll avoid a sudden problem in the dead of winter or highest heat of the summer.
