How to Light a Furnace Pilot Light | Air Comfort HVAC

With temperatures getting lower, we all want to know we can count on a comfortable home heating system. One very common but frustrating homeowner problem is an extinguished pilot light of a gas furnace. Check the Instructions
Your furnace should have a label on it that tells you how to light it. However, the label may be too difficult to read. If that’s the case for you, keep these instructions handy to make the task that much easier. Here are some tips to keep all of your home manuals organized.

Locate the Pilot Light Components
Look toward the bottom of your furnace for a switch that reads “Pilot,” “On” and “Off”. Once you the switch, turn it to the “Off” position. Wait a minimum of five minutes to allow the gas time to dissipate. Also locate the “Reset” button, which should be close to the on/off switch.

Re-Light the Pilot Light
Once you’ve allowed the gas to dissipate, turn the switch over to “Pilot.” Hold down the “Reset” button and use a long lighter to place a flame at the pilot light opening. Once you know the pilot light is lit, let go of the reset button.

Still Not Working?
If you’ve tried the steps above more than twice and the pilot light either won’t light or won’t stay lit, something is wrong with your furnace. Time to call a professional.

Never attempt to light your furnace without turning it off first. Excess gas is a fire hazard and can damage your home and lead to injury.
