Prepping Your Home for Holiday Guests


Is your home ready for the holidays? We know, it seems frightfully early to ask about holiday prep, before Halloween! But when you consider Thanksgiving is less than one month away, and Christmas isn’t far behind, you’ll realize it’s not too early to begin getting your home in order for guests.

The great thing about beginning your holiday prep now is you’ll be much less rushed to finish everything before your guests arrive. Check out these tips:

Entrance

  • You’ll want your walkways and porches free of ice or snow. Make sure you have a ready supply of ice melt to sprinkle.
  • Make sure all of your outdoor lighting works properly after dark.
  • Create an organized spot to collect cold weather apparel, like coats and boots. You can add extra hangers to your coat closet or designate a specific room.
  • Also consider adding another doormat for wet boots.

Living Area

  • If your carpet has seen better days, you might want schedule a professional carpet cleaning.
  • Wash windows so your guests can better enjoy the view.

Bathrooms

  • Tiles that seem to never get clean will benefit from replacement or new grout.
  • Make sure your bathroom fan and window (if you have one) work well to help avoid mildew problems from excess moisture.
  • Stock up on guest bath and hand towels.

Kitchen

  • Inspect the condition of your counter tops, cabinets, and appliances.
  • If you’re going to be cooking for big groups, you might consider new appliances.

Guest rooms

  • Stock up on guest bed linens and extra blankets.
  • Clear out closet and drawer space to help your guests feel comfortable.
  • Get a bedside clock and reading light for each guest who may need it.
