Protect Your Plumbing in Cold Winters

It only takes a few days of below freezing temperatures in an entire winter season to suddenly find yourself in a plumbing emergency. The experience of frozen pipes that burst is certainly the type of ordeal all homeowners want to avoid, but fortunately there are several relatively simple ways to protect your home’s plumbing during the winter months.

  • If you’re planning to travel for the holidays or go on vacation, don’t set your furnace below 55 degrees.
  • Insulate your hot water heater with a specifically-designed blanket from your local hardware or big box retailer, or apply duct tape and insulation.
  • Turn off the water supply to all sprinkler systems. Use compressed air to blow any water out of the lines to prevent freezing.
  • Turn off the water supply to any exterior faucets and drain them. You can use an insulated cover on the outdoor faucets or foam pipe insulation.
  • Wrap insulation around any exposed pipes. That includes pipes in an under-the-sink cabinet.
  • Know where to locate the water shut-off switch, so you can cut off the water supply fast in case of an emergency.
