Survive A Summer Heat Wave | Air Comfort HVAC

Everybody looks forward to some aspect of summertime, right? Whether it’s a summer vacation, backyard barbecues, heading to the beach or staying indoors, summer offers something for everyone. But what do you do when the summer heat kicks in and becomes sweltering? Air Comfort HVAC has gathered some tips for you!

  • When we’re experiencing an extreme heat wave in Georgia or Tennessee, stay Indoors as much as you can.
  • If you’re in a building without AC, it helps to stay on the ground floor.
  • Make sure you change out your AC filters more often since your cooling system is working harder than ever.
  • In an extreme heat wave, opt for a location with an actual cooling system rather than fans because electric fans cannot actually cool the air.
  • Remember to drink lots of water throughout the day to help you feel more cool and to remain well-hydrated.
  • Water and sports drinks are your safest bet in the heat–both alcohol and caffeine should be avoided as they exacerbate your heat symptoms.
  • Never, ever leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle. It only takes minutes for the temperature inside a closed vehicle to rise above 140 degrees F.
  • If your cooling system can’t keep up with the heat, consider visiting a shopping mall or movie theater to cool down.
  • For the greatest energy efficiency, set your thermostat to 78 degrees.
  • Turn off your air conditioning when no one is home. It’s ideal to get a programmable thermostat so you can cool your home for about 20 minutes before you return.
  • Make sure you’re prepared for any power outages or disruptions by keeping an emergency supply kit on hand. It should have a flashlight, battery-powered AM/FM radio, first-aid kit, bottled water, shelf-stable food and extra batteries.
