Time for a New System?

As your thoughts begin to shift from your home’s cooling to heating needs, you might have questions about when it’s time to replace your home comfort system. Here’s a few items to consider.

Age of your current system.
Assuming you’ve had regular maintenance and service performed by a qualified tech, your system should typically last between 12 and 15 years.

Warning signs.
Other signs it’s time for a new system can include:

  • The equipment has seen frequent repairs.
  • Your monthly energy bills have increased.
  • Some of the rooms in your home feel too hot or too cold.
  • Your system is noisier than it used to be.
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home is excessively dusty.
  • You need to leave your thermostat set at one constant temperature.

What difference will it make?
Today’s new systems can be as much as 60 percent more efficient than most decades-old equipment. Modern comfort systems also offer a variety of enhanced features, like two-stage cooling, dehumidifiers, humidifiers and ultraviolet lights, that can substantially boost your comfort and improve the air quality inside your home.

Both air conditioners and heat pumps–for cooling purposes–are rated according to the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). The efficiency of a fuel-burning furnace is known as the annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), and heat pump efficiency–for home heating–is the unit’s heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF). Generally, the higher the AFUE, SEER or HSPF rating, the better efficiency and lower operating expense for you.
